I wonder what the Canadian flag looked like before the adoption of the Maple Leaf flag?

If I recall, there was never a federally-adopted, official national flag. The various provinces had their own flags, and the Union Flag of the British empire was used as the national flag.

True. Union Jack was the official flag. Some unofficial ones commonly used "pre-maple leaf" are here: http://www.pch.gc.ca/eng/1363610088709/1363610249607

Thank you, that was interesting and informative. The U.S. has had some interesting flags before we adopted the Stars and Stripes as well.
