Did some Hawai'ian whale watching myself last month. Took a "Whale Watch" boat, saw two at about 200 yards. Then saw four at 100 yards on the tender back to the cruise ship, and eight at 40 yards from the deck there. Definitely need to find a new company to watch with in future!

Federal law says boats can't approach whales closer than 100 yards. If they come to you the boat must stop moving.

The younger ones are curious and will come right up to boats. Here's one that decided to rub his belly on my keel.

Yeah, that 40-yard sighting was from an achored cruise ship. I think we were okay with the law on that one!
