Well, it seems things are starting to look up. Yesterday at church, we broke up into groups for prayer, and I asked for prayer to get out of the shelter--and for a cat. The couple I was praying with said, "We have a room available." :rocker:
About once or twice a year I go on Petfinders to get my "kitty fix", and found a beautiful kitty who, due to vitiglio, has a coat that looks like the starry night sky. His name is Thackery Dax--who thought up THAT name?--but if I get him, I'm changing it to Orion. He was found hungry and scared in a Las Vegas apartment, where he had been left behind when his former owners moved out. He's now in a cat rescue in Burbank. I'm going to email the rescue today to see how much the adoption fee is, etc..
EDIT--Actually it was Thackery Binx.

Just checkin' in. How is everybody? Bedbugs are making a comeback--likely from the men's area--but not as bad as before, so far. I got more bedbug spray. Those of you affected by the hurricanes, how you making out? Seventeen days left in the hurricane season, with the possibility of another Atlantic storm. Hope it doesn't develop, or if it does, it stays away from land. Here on the West Coast, we got swiped by Sergio--which resulted in a spectacular thunderstorm and much-needed rain.

The California fires are making the news up in Canada. Is the smoke reaching down into your neck of the woods?
2 years ago the smoke from the canadian fires resulted in a visit to Seattle from which we never did see Mt Ranier.

Well, last week the moon turned an orangish-yellow color, and we did get a whiff of the smell of smoke. But other than that, it's mostly being blown out to sea. What's tragic is so many people died in the Camp fire up north, and they could've survived had they taken evacuation warnings seriously. All were found burned to death in their cars. In the Woolsey fire, only 2 deaths have been reported.

A friend's daughter lost her home to the last big Malibu fire over ten years ago. It took years to get a permit from the city to rebuild.

When the Woolsey fire took off, her husband determined they weren't going through the process again so he stayed to fight it out. He kept the hose running and their home survived.

Just talked to a friend who arrived yesterday from the Bay Area. He said they were in smoke from Redding to Ashland. We started seeing smoke from the south this morning.

And the death toll keeps mounting; when are people going to start evacuating when told? They should have a plan in advance to determine where to go, how to get there, etc., in case their customary route is cut off by fire. These people are waiting too long to leave, which is why so many are getting burned to death in their cars. And there are now more than a thousand people missing. When buying a home, one should consider how susceptible it is to fires, etc.. Here's a website I found that can tell you what hazards a place you're considering buying or where you live already are likely to affect you: www.conservation.ca.gov/cgs./pages1SH-EQZ-APP.aspx ; note that it's for California. Whether other states have a similar page or not, I don't know. When I tried this, my current place of residence had a high chance of getting whacked by an earthquake; fire was much less likely. You can also try the USGS.gov site; they provide flood data as well through a link.

Hello, all!

We have successfully moved to Anaheim, to an RV Park on Harbor near Ball.

We lost our apartment when the rent exceeded our fixed disability income (seven years of three-digit rent increases).

We were very fortunate, however: we were able to trade our paid-off 2010 wheelchair minivan for a 1990 camper van.

Our spot rent is far less than our apartment was, so we will finally get ten years of medical debt paid off next year!

The roof leaks in the rain and we don’t have hot water, but she is ours free and clear!

Anyhow, we have our APs (priorities!), and while we can’t treat anyone until next year, we love making new friends...

The APs are an investment in my wife’s health (she can walk miles in Disneyland almost without noticing), which is great for her MS.
So many forget that the Parks are also beautiful *parks*!

I am in a powerchair with a yellow and pink lap tray, and she has a blue rollator walker with rainbow and paw print tape accents.

We are grateful for all CMs and their support teams and friends.
The people make the Magic, and the Magic makes our lives brighter!

Hope this year is going a bit better for folks, and perhaps we might meet some of you sometime.

Last week, I came home to find my bed and stuff gone. I asked my neighbors, and they they found bedbugs, so my stuff was bagged and put into storage. When I asked staff for details, they assured me I was not the source--come to think of it, a few nights before, there was a girl having a royal fit because she found a bedbug in her bed, and another on her clothes. I was put in another area of the women's area, known as the "Wind Tunnel". I'm getting over a sinus infection; are they trying to make me get pneumonia? And get this--the next night, I saw a new cot in my space. The night after that, they put another woman in my spot--where I have lived for 2 years! I have tried talking to staff about my getting my space back, and I keep getting the runaround. I finally asked the person in charge of bed assignments, and she refused to give me my space back, saying it would be "too hard" to do so. It sure wasn't hard for them to move me! I counted, and as of last night, there were nearly a dozen empty beds in the women's area! I don't see what's so "hard" about it! Problem is, if you file a complaint, you get kicked out.
Yesterday I went to the KTLA site--we used to watch channel 5, but the signal kept going out, as we have over the air antenna TV--and saw an article that named our shelter and a couple others as being the worst by the ACLU. So, I contacted KTLA, gave my experience--including getting my suitcase stolen by a staff member last June--and suggested that since photography was not allowed in the shelter--gee, I wonder why?--maybe they could do an undercover investigation, with someone who could draw. After all, lots of people in there draw and color, so that might be a way to record things without attracting attention.

Last Saturday, I went through my bagged stuff, got some things out I really needed, as well as my bedding. I took my bedding to the laundromat and washed everything. I had been issued some blankets, but one had dog hair all over it, and another stank so much I had to put it under me. The one that went on top had some stains on it. After washing my bedding, I took off the borrowed blankets, made my bed with my bedding, and put the dirty ones in the laundry area. They needed it! And for a change, I am warm! I nearly froze to death with those other blankets! I've been trying to get ahold of Ms. Doris, who runs the place, but she apparently is in meetings to find us another place, because 1.) our shelter will be closed in October due to an event center being built across the street, and 2.) a facility in another part of town is being prepared for us, but it won't be ready by October. I really think the bedbug thing was an excuse to get me out of that spot, because one of my neighbors is a cranky old hag who was getting on my case for coughing. My neighbors were mostly telling her to shut up, and she would curse them out. I think she had something to do with it, even though I'm not coughing that much now. Oh, I did find bedbugs in my stuff--two of them--and I killed both. I have bedbug spray. It's been over a week that my stuff has been bagged up, and I was told 3 days. One of our mental health counselors has said he will speak to the witch in charge of bedding assignments even though I'm not a client. So far nothing, but I keep hoping.
