Somebody should tell Congress that; they'd be really shocked.

Agreed, though some would say it's been falling down on the job since the onset of the New Deal.

There's no way to tell if any of these belong to either a well regulated militia or the Tuba Platoon.

LIBBY, MT, 9/08/13: The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department is reviewing its protocol for discharging a weapon, specifically for euthanizing an injured animal, after one of three shots fired by a deputy pierced a metal door and entered a home in Libby.

FARGO, ND, 9/13/13: A North Dakota State University police officer is on medical leave, recovering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. UPDATE: Police reports indicate Thomas told investigators he consumed two or three beers the night of the incident and at the time of the shooting was watching an instructional video on his computer having to do with close-quarters shooting with a handgun.

STRUTHERS, OH, 9/17/13: Police say last week’s burglary on West Lewis Street was a ruse, concocted by the homeowner to hide his accidentally shooting himself earlier that day. [Detective Jeff] Lewis added that [suspect Paul] Trimacco confessed to making up the burglary story to explain how he actually shot himself while testing the credibility of his flak jacket, because he didn’t want his girlfriend to know the truth about his injuries.

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, 9/20/13: A Missouri House staffer allegedly left a loaded gun in a public restroom in the state Capitol last week. According to a Capitol Police incident report, a Kahr CM9 9mm pistol—later claimed by House Speaker Tim Jones’ legislative assistant Dave Evans—was found on top of the toilet paper dispenser in a men's restroom in the Capitol basement Friday. The incident report states that the gun “was fully loaded with one round in the chamber and six rounds in the magazine.”

I'm guessing Tuba Platoon.

DULUTH, MN, 9/22/13: A Duluth man who unintentionally shot himself with a .22-caliber handgun has been arrested on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm and failing to register as a predatory offender. The 25-year-old man suffered a single, non-life-threatening gunshot wound in the pelvic area. [Ed. note:I think we all know what that means.]

Tuba for sure.

FLINT, MI, 9/26/13: While fighting with his girlfriend, a man shot out her car window, then accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Oommm paa paa.

WILKESBORO, N.C. -- Police in Wilkesboro are looking for the man who they say accidentally fired a gun in a store during a discussion on the Second Amendment. The incident happened Tuesday evening in the GNC store on Winkler Street.

Police say the man pulled out his gun to show an employee when he accidentally shot a printer. According to the police report, the man told the store employee he "could not go down for this," and left.

It's obvious to me that the printer was just asking for it.

MOUNTAIN CITY, TN, 9/27/13: Jody Putnam, now a former Mountain City Police Officer, was on duty when Dollar General needed help with a squirrel in their building. According to police department records, Putnam fired his gun inside the store. "Shooting back there, of course that should not have been, that should not have happened," said property owner Carl Duffield. But that didn't work, so he tried another weapon. Duffield said, "then they began to spray it with mace and pepper spray." And the mace affected more than just the squirrel. "There was a lot of people that come out and just like me they came out and they were coughing and a hacking it was comical," said Duffield, "but I'm sure they didn't feel that way, the customers that came out." Neither did the town of Mountain City and its police department. According to the policy and procedures for the department, whenever an officer fires his gun he must immediately report it to a supervisor, then make a written statement. Putnam refused to make a report.

POYNETTE, WI, 11/01/13: Corrective action has been taken after a police officer accidentally fired a rifle earlier this month. On Nov. 1, at about 1 a.m. a Poynette Police Officer was doing maintenance on a rifle when the incident occurred, according to police chief Donald White. White said the officer became distracted by a telephone call while reloading the weapon. “When he came back to finish loading the weapon, he forgot he had already set the sear,” White said in the press release. “He put the magazine in the weapon. He then went to set the sear and the weapon fired.” The round went into the chief’s office creating a hole the size of a 50-cent piece. White said the wall has been repaired and the officer was the only one in the police department at the time. “In checking with other law enforcement agencies, the accidental discharge of rifles is more common than I knew,” White said.

EDEN, VT, 11/09/13: Vermont Fish and Wildlife authorities say a pony was accidentally shot and killed during Youth Hunting weekend. Officials say the pony was killed Saturday in Eden by a 14-year-old boy who thought he was shooting at a deer.

BARTLESVILLE, OK, 11/09/13: A 50-year-old local man was reportedly injured Saturday when a small caliber handgun went off at a local gun shop. Bartlesville Police Department Capt. Jay Hastings said the shooting happened around 1 p.m. Nov. 9. “The victim had taken a pre-1950 .22 revolver in to have it looked at, and it accidentally went off and shot the customer in the groin,” Hastings told the Examiner-Enterprise.

HURST, TX, 11/13/13: An employee at a North Texas Target accidentally shot himself in the hand with a gun dropped by a customer on Wednesday afternoon. The store employee who found the gun thought it was a lighter and tested the trigger, shooting himself in the hand, Niekamp said.
