I had to deal with stupid, lazy shelter workers this morning--made me wait over an hour and a half to help me get my bin so I could get clean clothes--so I wasn't in the mood to read an article that was going to make me feel even madder. No offense.

But I read somewhere that if you take video of your baby when it's born and shortly after, a doctor with special training can tell from your video whether your child will become autistic or not. Something about the way they act.
But autism has been around long before vaccination, so there you go.

An editorial from the LA Times.

The anti-vaxx movement is a worldwide pandemic

It’s not quite six weeks into 2019, and it’s already looking like it will be another banner year for measles in the United States. An outbreak in the Pacific Northwest that began in late January continues to spread, with more than 50 cases now being reported. Meanwhile, Texas health officials on Tuesday confirmed five cases of measles in the Houston area — four of them in children under 2. And health officials in New York are still dealing with an outbreak of measles from late 2018 among orthodox Jews who apparently brought the virus back from Israel.

The global measles picture is even gloomier. A large and ongoing measles outbreak in the Philippines has killed at least 50 people, and may have spread to Australia. Nearly 12,000 measles cases have been reported in the Ukraine in the first month of 2019. And more than 28,000 cases have been reported in Madagascar since 2018. New cases are popping up all the time. For example, last week authorities in Manchester, England, urged residents to get vaccinated after a local case of measles was confirmed.

They should tell parents to either vaccinate their kids or lose benefits, like being able to access medical care if the kid gets sick. Harsh I know, but let's face it, some people need to be hit upside the head with a 2x4 to get them to pay attention. No more "religious exemption". Most religions that say no to vaccinations are whack job operations anyway. The Amish leave it up to parents to decide whether to vaccinate. I know vaccines didn't exist in Biblical times, but they did have a quarantine law.
I read in a local parenting magazine that one parent refused to vaccinate their young daughter, and she got whatever was going around and died. Turns out she'd been born without a spleen, which in addition to recycling worn-out red blood cells, is also an important part of the immune system. That's not what they check for before or after birth. People who think their kids have a really strong immune system--as at least one parent in the article stated about her kid--are extremely naive about how the immune system works. It works best when exposed to weakened doses of killed viruses. Then when exposure occurs, the disease doesn't have a chance to take hold. That's why you vaccinate. Now, if you nursed your child, then you give them a short form of immunity in the milk. But when the child is weaned, there goes the temporary immunity, and vaccines are needed.

Good for him! Perhaps he could smuggle his siblings to a clinic to be vaccinated.
I once, long ago, read an article about how the mother of a teenage girl managed to convince her that smoking pot was bad for her. She assembled 10 second factoids on 3x5 cards, set a timer, and stated one factoid at a time, despite the daughter stating she didn't want to hear anything bad about pot. It took awhile, but eventually she did convince her daughter to give up pot. Maybe a similar tactic would work on this boy's mom, and others.

Now they're reporting "wind-borne sickness" among kids; it's actually Kawasaki disease. More lame medical articles. But, it's all about making a buck, isn't it?

Some healthcare workers had shirts printed with "Vaccines Cause Adults" to fight the PNW anti-vaxx movement. Silly me, I forgot to get the link. During the Presidents' Day weekend, I was at Barnes and Noble because the libraries were closed, and found a book Nicola Tesla and Thomas Edison. It stated that Tesla was autistic; a look at his bio on Wikipedia stated he didn't believe in doctors. So, if by the twisted non-logic of the anti-vaxxers, if Tesla never got vaccinated, how could he be autistic? It all started when a doctor running a scam came up with the idea, and it was later picked up and passed along by some bimbo whose I.Q. was lower than her bust size. Yeah, really trustworthy sources right there.

In other news, I have been informed that I will become a great aunt for the third time--my oldest niece, mother of my grandniece and grandnephew, is expecting another boy in June. Another little one to spoil!
