Just Because...

A place to be entertained. Videos, jokes, games, and more.
Forum rules
At the old Disney Hyperion Studio, the screening room where animators would show animated scenes to Walt for his approval was small, with no ventilation or AC. Not only was it hot, but the animators were nervously awaiting Walt's reaction to their work. Thus, the room became known as the Sweatbox. Even after the Studio moved to Burbank and elegant screening rooms were offered to the staff, the moniker remained.

Now SGT has a sweatbox of our own. This is the place to find and post all entertaining topics such as video links, jokes, games, and the like. A general rule of thumb is that if the thread is meant to be informative (interesting news stories for example), or a topic for discussion (like setting up a park meet) then it should go in the Break Room, but if the intent is to entertain the masses then it's home is The Sweatbox. I'm sure there will be grey areas at times, so if you have doubt as to where a new thread should go, just use your best judgement and the SGT Staff will be glad to move it later if you guessed wrong.

Love that he took a selfie while he was up there.

Also, thank you, Lord, for my desk job.

Awwww, come on. Wouldn't you like to climb it just once? Think of the workout your quads would get.

Also your upper arms. If you don't climb "right," you are essentially pulling yourself up, rather than the correct way where you are using your legs to push your self up. Yes, your quads do get a workout.

Notice that he is always "tied-off" to the tower. Never free climbing. He's also using a full body harness which is now OSHA required (has been for a number of years).

One of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

Only if you miss a step, otherwise it's as safe as a baby crib. It's not even the falling that is the problem, it's that sudden stop when you reach the ground.

I am reminded of this video that came out a while back. I have seen it in HD but could not find it today.

Either way, I don't want the job with either company. Send a drone in my place.

Met a manthe other day who does this for a living, except he works on high tension towers (power lines). Except he doesn't climb, he uses a helicopter to get up there. Given that it could be a two-day hike to get to the base of some towers, plus the time to climb up and down, it's actually cost-effective.

Don't want his job neither!

If you are climbing because you are climbing, or to change a lightbulb. Otherwise, you are hauling up 50-60 lbs of tools and other crap. Some guys get into the "business" because they are young and are not scared of heights. They tend to be "daredevils," and get the idea that they can't fall or can't die. They will take chances by free climbing (with that 50-60 lbs of tools and crap), or doing things that are inherently dangerous.

There are old tower climbers, and there are bold tower climbers. But there aren't any old and bold tower climbers.

I still believe there's no old ones because their knees give out. A week ago I became a big fan of Hyalgan. My knee no longer clicks.

That, and that most people cannot stand on a thin piece of steel (rung) for long periods of time (without the right shoes/boots), and older guys worry about strokes and heart attacks.
