I actually have been at an attraction where my parents were ahead of me in queue, but since it's just me, not some mad army, I have been let through to them by very nice guests.

I guess the true adult in that family lead the kid out of the pool! I would almost be willing to bet that if you had said something to mom, you would have got (at one point) in her tirade the "we paid a lot of money, so he is going to experience THIS!" sort of logic that makes kids cry on...
